I know that I'm doing the plot right when I start to see full scenes and hear dialogue in my head, but I haven't ever written those things out beforehand; the closest I get it putting a line of dialogue into a plot.<br /><br />As for stand alone, not quite - I always plot the first book as a single one, but nine out of ten of my plots have hooks for a sequel or two (or six). Many times, they don't make it into the story due to massive changes that render them no longer relevant, but I love going back and reading them occasionally. From what I gathered, the "no longer relevant" part is what you're fighting. I think mine is due to it being part of a 5 book series instead of being stand alone stories like the ones you build.
